Climate Protection Network for independent cultural institutions

Leipzig – Germany

Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 5:
Facilitating connections between local cultural stakeholders

A climate protection network for the independent cultural scene was founded in Leipzig in June 2024, marking an important step towards integrating environmental responsibility into the city’s vibrant creative ecosystem.

The initiative brings together 22 independent organisations, associations and institutions from across the cultural spectrum, from small collectives and art spaces to larger cultural venues, united by a shared commitment to reducing their ecological footprint.

The network’s main goal is to familiarise its members and stakeholders with sustainable practices, supporting them in developing concrete measures and long-term strategies to make their work more environmentally conscious. Through collaboration and shared learning, it aims to build a stronger, more resilient cultural community that leads by example in tackling climate challenges.

To ensure this process is well guided, the city’s culture department has commissioned experienced experts to coordinate the network’s activities. These experts organise regular meetings, workshops and exchange sessions, offering participants professional advice and tailored support to help each organisation advance its own sustainability agenda. This demonstrates Leipzig’s belief that cultural life and climate protection can go hand in hand, inspiring others to follow a similar path toward a greener cultural future.
