Counter for heritage and sustainability
Amsterdam – The Netherlands
Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture
Priority 6:
Improving the energy efficiency of cultural buildings
To align with the Paris Agreement’s sustainability goals, the city of Amsterdam has committed to making all buildings, including its many monuments and heritage sites, more sustainable.
However, preserving the cultural and historical value of these buildings while introducing sustainability measures presents particular challenges.
The city launched the “Counter for Heritage and Sustainability” to address this, by guiding residents and property owners in making their buildings more sustainable without compromising their historic value.
Before 2021, residents and property owners often struggled to navigate rules and regulations, frequently finding it difficult to connect with the right person within the city’s organisation.
The process has since improved, with individuals now being properly directed and receiving timely responses.
Several initiatives have been introduced on a digital platform, including interactive maps, online webinars, informational gatherings, and the creation of policy documents for personalised guidance on navigating sustainability efforts.
This enables residents, property owners, and organisations to easily access advice on implementing sustainable measures, such as installing solar panels or improving energy efficiency, while respecting heritage values.
