Joint ticketing to tackle emissions

Turku – Finland

Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 3:
Rethinking mobility / reducing carbon emissions due to the mobility of artists and audiences

Turku is addressing the environmental impact of public transportation linked to cultural participation by introducing an innovative joint ticketing system that combines access to cultural events and public transport.

This aims to make sustainable mobility an integral part of the city’s cultural experience, reducing emissions generated by audience travel while encouraging greater attendance at local events.

The public transport provider Föli operates across Turku and its surrounding municipalities, with the same tickets valid throughout the entire network. This seamless system allows visitors to move easily between venues and districts without relying on private vehicles. The joint ticket currently covers eight major cultural and sports institutions, including performances at the Turku City Theatre, concerts by the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, and matches of the HC TPS ice hockey team.

By linking culture and mobility, Turku demonstrates how coordinated local policies can enhance accessibility, strengthen cultural participation and contribute to the city’s broader climate goals.

Encouraged by the positive response, the municipality is now exploring ways to expand the scheme to include more venues and events, making sustainable travel an everyday choice for audiences across the region.
