Wien Museum: Renovate, refurbish and reduce CO2 emissions

Vienna – Austria

Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 6:
Improving the energy efficiency of cultural buildings

The Wien Museum is a general-purpose metropolitan museum with a wide range of collections and exhibitions on themes from the history of the city to art, fashion and modern culture, from the earliest settlements to the present day.

Built and opened in the 1950s, the museum’s collections, exhibitions and activities have since grown, leading to an inevitable need for increased capacity.

After a long debate on the location, Vienna City Council decided to refurbish and expand the Wien Museum on Karlplatz. The expansion and refurbishment doubles the museum space to 12,000 m² and creates a modern, centrally located city museum for Vienna’s residents and tourists.

The museum’s new energy management systems, from geothermal and solar power to green roofs and intelligent building services, make it a state-of-the-art sustainable building.

The landscaping in front of the museum, with its added greenery and water features, is also a significant upgrade for Karlsplatz square.
