A network of reused materials for museums

Gijon – Spain

Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 1:
Reducing the use of resources and using sustainable public procurement

To address sustainability and resource management challenges, the Gijon Municipal Museum Network supports the reuse of museum material across its eight museums.

This practice aims to reduce costs, optimise storage, and reinforce the application of sustainability criteria in the museum sector.

Resources are centralised at the Antiguo Instituto Cultural Centre and are available for loan to all museums in the network. Materials such as furniture, multimedia equipment, and lighting are shared and reused for temporary exhibitions and events. This practice, first implemented decades ago, ensures resources are used efficiently and sustainably. For example, LED lighting and multimedia materials, such as video projectors and TVs, are reused across different sites, reducing the environmental and financial impact of acquiring new equipment.

Gijon’s reuse system has had a significant impact, including:

  • Reduced costs and resource usage by sharing materials between museums.
  • Enhanced curatorial possibilities with a diverse range of resources.
  • Improved preventative conservation by ensuring optimal conditions for displaying artefacts.
  • More sustainable and versatile acquisitions.

Funded by the Municipal Foundation of Culture, Education and the Popular University, the initiative is reviewed every year.
