Greening the stage: Sustainable theatre productions

Birmingham – United Kingdom

Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 1:
Reducing the use of resources and using sustainable public procurement

In 2023, Birmingham Rep Theatre, with the support of Birmingham City Council, declared a climate emergency and joined the Culture Declares movement to reduce its environmental impact.

The Theatre Green Book was created and adopted as a way to guide this process, offering practical solutions to reduce carbon footprints in theatre production, from material sourcing to energy use and tracking the lifecycle of productions.

Impressive sustainability achievements have been made across productions. For example, the Rep Theatre’s 2023 Christmas production of Little Red Riding Hood utilised 74.5% reused materials, with 79% planned for future reuse. These efforts are particularly important lessons for family shows, as the children in the audience today are the actors of tomorrow.
