Sustainable practices in Nantes’ Museum of Arts

Nantes, France

Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 1:
Reducing the use of resources and using sustainable public procurement

The Museum of Arts in Nantes places a strong emphasis on sustainability, embedding it as a guiding principle across its operations.

Beyond recycling materials used in exhibitions, the museum ensures that environmental considerations are systematically integrated into its procurement and production processes.

A large share of its exhibition infrastructure (including walls, beams, and benches) is reused from previous displays, with the same providers also handling both dismantling and recycling to minimise waste and emissions.

This circular approach not only reduces environmental impact but also fosters long-term partnerships with local suppliers. Looking ahead, the museum plans to collaborate more closely with other cultural institutions in Nantes by sharing storage spaces and resources, further optimising material reuse, improving resource efficiency, and strengthening the city’s collective cultural ecosystem.
