A rising trend: Cultural prescriptions

Rennes – France

Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 13:
Taking creative climate action to improve health and wellbeing

Since 2022, Rennes and Rennes Metropole have tested museum prescriptions allowing patients, upon recommendations by health professionals’ recommendation, to access free cultural activities at partner museums and art centres.

Inspired by initiatives in Belgium and Quebec, these prescriptions aim to support patients’ psycho-social well-being through cultural experiences alongside talking therapies. These include guided tours or contemplative walks, designed to soothe, stimulate, and enrich.

The initiative brings together cultural and health professionals, involving 10 cultural venues (including contemporary art centres, museums, and science spaces) and 6 health establishments (including psychiatric hospitals and clinics).

Health professionals are allocated a quota of prescriptions to offer patients, who also receive a booklet with venue details and contact information for mediators. Patients can use their prescription to gain free access to exhibitions for themselves and a companion.

A recent evaluation (2024) shows that around 25% of prescriptions are used and feedback from patients and cultural partners is positive.

Based on feedback, health and cultural organisations have confirmed their desire to continue the collaboration and to set up a permanent arrangement. They have identified various levers for the future, such as improving the conditions for welcoming and supporting patients.
