A shared vision for a climate-neutral Bonn
Bonn – Germany
Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture
Priority 14:
Strengthening cultural and artistic diversity
Bonn’s Sustainable Cultural Strategy 2035 recognises culture and sport as tools for climate action and social inclusion, directly supporting the city’s goal to become climate-neutral by 2035.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) acted as a frame of reference for the city’s sustainable cultural strategy, with five priority SDGs derived in the process: quality education, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, and partnerships.
Developed over two years through a broad participatory process, the new cultural strategy engaged 550 people across 130 institutions, generating over 700 ideas.
The needs of the cultural and sporting sectors were collected and understood through an online survey and a joint event. These were condensed into nine policies and two guiding themes: “casual learning” (integrating education and culture in informal settings) and “communities of shared benefit/Beutegemeinschaft” (creating synergies through cooperation).
Though participants noted a need for more development time, the participatory and results-oriented components of the process have proven to be particularly effective in generating a large number of ideas.
