Agent for Change: Maximizing diversity in Glasgow’s cultural scene

Glasgow – United Kingdom

Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 14:
Strengthening cultural and artistic diversity

In 2017, Glasgow Life, an external body of Glasgow City Council, created a new role to tackle racism and inequality. The Agent for Change, also known as the Senior Arts and Music manager in charge of Diversity, aims at maximising ethnic diversity across Glasgow’s cultural scene.

The Agent for Change role raises awareness among policymakers, public officials and private employers on racial equality to create an encouraging and welcoming environment for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) to participate in different sectors.

Having an Agent for Change has increased the number of BIPOC artists in the delivery cohort as part of Glasgow Life’s wider anti-racism initiatives, embedding anti-racism in the daily practices of many local festivals and activities. It has also encouraged support for the creations of artists, practitioners and stakeholders of colour.

This pilot has received positive results and feedback in Scotland, and the role has subsequently been established in the city council of Edinburgh.
