Bringing culture outside the city centre (II)
Guimaraes – Portugal
Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture
Priority 11:
Providing access to cultural programmes for all, ensuring that barriers to access to culture are addressed
The municipality of Guimarães, the 2026 European Green Capital, believes in the fundamental role culture plays in the dynamics of urban regeneration.
It developed Excentricidade (ExcentriCity) in partnership with parish councils and local partner networks, and aims to create new centres of cultural consumption that showcase a variety of artistic expressions, fostering connections through modern, diverse, and engaging cultural programs.
ExentriCity focuses on new venues while following the same strategy as the city’s cultural spaces: to create opportunities for audiences and creators, to support the growth of citizens as cultural individuals and to contribute to the strengthening of human relations, responsible citizenship, enlightenment and sharing.
From an environmental perspective, bringing cultural events closer to areas where communities lack access to public transportation at night also helps reduce the need for private transportation to reach cultural venues.
