Bringing culture outside the city centre

Florence – Italy

Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 11:
Providing access to cultural programmes for all, ensuring that barriers to access to culture are addressed

Since 2012, Florence has developed Estate Fiorentina (the Florentine Summer) into a six-month, city-wide cultural festival that promotes inclusion, accessibility, and social cohesion.

From May to October, the 2023 edition offered over 1,000 mostly free cultural events across all neighbourhoods, particularly outside the city centre.

These included 132 cultural partners and 111 decentralised projects. Over 150 local associations took part, helping to activate public spaces and reach diverse audiences.

The programme focuses on involving vulnerable groups and young people, using culture to support post-pandemic recovery, strengthen communities, and boost the local economy.

Through municipal support, European funds (National Operation Programme, Metro), and private sponsorships, funding has increased significantly from EUR 200,000.00 to EUR 1,900,000.00
