Celebrating creative ageing

Helsinki – Finland

Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 12:
Developing ambitious cultural projects for vulnerable groups

Helsinki is actively promoting creative ageing and taking comprehensive measures to ensure that cultural rights are upheld for people of all ages and in all life situations.

The city recognises culture as an essential part of well-being and social participation, and works to make it accessible throughout different stages of life.

At the heart of this effort are cultural instructors, who operate as part of multi-professional teams within Helsinki’s social and health care services. These professionals design and deliver outreach programmes, remote cultural activities, and creative workshops for older people, while fostering collaboration between cultural institutions and healthcare providers.

Their work ensures that artistic and cultural experiences reach residents in hospitals, care homes, and community centres, helping to integrate creativity into everyday life and support well-being.

In addition, the city contributes to the ARMAS Festival – Celebrating Ageing Artfully, an annual event that showcases older artists and explores themes of ageing through arts and culture. The festival encourages intergenerational dialogue, strengthens social connections, and promotes cultural inclusion by presenting ageing as an active and creative stage of life.
