Connecting new audiences to classical music with Música Guiada

Gijon – Spain

Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 11:
Providing access to cultural programmes for all, ensuring that barriers to access to culture are addressed

The city of Gijon launched the Música Guiada (Guided Music) initiative to make classical music accessible to new audiences, particularly those who do not usually engage with this type of cultural activity.

The aim is to overcome barriers related to geography, economic limitations, and educational backgrounds by offering free, didactic concerts.

Música Guiada is a programme that brings classical music to the city’s peripheral areas. It is run by the Universidad Popular, an organisation offering courses, workshops, and events that engage the local community in culture and creativity.

The programme offers free, live concerts with explanatory narrations that guide audiences through the music being performed. By taking the concerts out of the traditional city centre venues and using a more accessible, educational approach, the project breaks down barriers to cultural participation.

Between 2021 and 2024 attendance increased by 439%, with 835 attendees in 2024. Feedback from participants is positive, especially regarding the decentralisation and accessibility of the concerts.

Local musicians were hired to perform, supporting artistic creation. Significant media presence also boosted the visibility of the Universidad Popular.
