Considering the carbon footprint of digital culture
Toulouse – France
Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture
Priority 8:
Using the potential of technology in a responsible way
Toulouse’s cultural institutions are re-evaluating their technological approach to reducing their carbon impact.
Toulouse’s library documentary information system is being replaced, designed to minimise its environmental footprint. Eco-design issues have been taken into account from earliest stage of identification, with a specialist consultancy firm commissioned to advise on the project.
From 2019 onwards, the Quai des Savoirs, a component of the Department of Scientific, Technical and Industrial Culture of Toulouse Metropole, also chose to prioritise documenting podcasts, because audio consumes less bandwidth, and therefore less energy. The curation team behind the podcasts prioritises the development of long-term formats to build audiences and mobilise their communities.
Two examples of these podcasts include:
- Détour vers le Futur (Detour to the Future), a podcast looking at contemporary research topics from the point of view of imagination and society.
- Sans réserves (Without restrictions), a podcast addressed to cultural professionals which looks at the diverse ways to transmit and share knowledge.
In June 2024, an episode of Sans Reserve/s, discussed how to deploy new digital technology for cultural mediation while limiting its carbon footprint.
