Ensuring staff and local actors are trained on ecological and biodiversity issues

Turku – Finland

Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 9:
Training city staff and local actors on biodiversity and ecological issues

The city of Turku aims to ensure that biodiversity and ecological issues are widely recognised and taken seriously amongst their own staff and local cultural actors. To do so, Turku organises education for administrative staff and partner organisations.

Capacity building in cultural organisations gives the city greater possibility to achieve its aims, while co-created education helps NGOs seamlessly incorporate sustainable development in their own agenda.

Cultural institutions in Turku, such as Turku City Theatre and Turku Museum Centre are applying principles and guidelines from EcoCompass. EcoCompass is a Finnish environmental management system to make operations more sustainable, prevent environmental risks, identify their most relevant environmental impacts, and focus on concrete actions.

When the system is used, an environmental programme which describes the organization’s measures to achieve the jointly set goals is assessed and approved.

An essential part of the programme includes regular training sessions for the staff and an annual evaluation of the effectiveness of the measures implemented.

In the future, the information obtained through the implementation of the EcoCompass will also be used to develop activities of cultural actors in the third sector.
