Linking culture, health and inclusion
Bologna – Italy
Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture
Priority 13:
Taking creative climate action to improve health and wellbeing
Bologna, a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage, has developed an integrated strategic plan for its civic museums (2025–2029) to respond to emerging challenges in cultural tourism, public health, sustainable finance, and civic engagement. As visitor numbers continue to grow, the city aims to strengthen the role of its museums not only as cultural institutions but also as spaces that contribute to social inclusion and individual well-being.
One of the plan’s most innovative elements is the introduction of cultural prescriptions, a new initiative that recognises the role of cultural participation in promoting psycho-physical health. Through close collaboration with the regional health service and the Emilia-Romagna Region, the city’s civic museums will host tailored activities and programmes designed for diverse audiences, including vulnerable groups. The goal is to improve quality of life through meaningful cultural experiences that connect art, care, and community.
In parallel, the QueeringBo project reflects Bologna’s commitment to diversity and social inclusion. Promoted by the municipality of Bologna, it encourages LGBTQIA+ narratives and perspectives within cultural institutions, challenging traditional art-historical canons and fostering a more plural and participatory heritage. By integrating queer voices into museum programming and public events, the project supports representation and dialogue across communities.
Together, these initiatives illustrate Bologna’s broader vision of culture as a driver of care, equity, and social innovation.
