Reintroducing traditional culture noticeboards

Manchester – United Kingdom

Pillar 2:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 11:
Providing access to cultural programmes for all, ensuring that barriers to access to culture are addressed

As part of Manchester’s new cultural framework, Always, Everywhere: Manchester’s Cultural Ambition 2024-2034, the city is committed to fostering an inclusive and sustainable cultural environment. This framework is built around three key themes:

  • Everyone: Making culture accessible and recognising the people who contribute to it.
  • Everything: Ensuring all cultural forms and art practices receive the support they need.
  • Everywhere: Expanding spaces wherein culture can thrive.

One of the key initiatives under this framework addresses the importance of accessibility, including for citizens that face barriers to digital platforms. Through community consultations, the city found that some groups prefer to engage with cultural information in a physical format, as they lack access to online services. In response, Manchester introduced the New Cultural Noticeboard.

This noticeboard centralises printed materials such as flyers and posters in the Manchester Central Library, making it easier for underrepresented communities to discover and participate in cultural activities.

A monthly summary of cultural opportunities across the city is also produced and displayed, helping ensure that these opportunities are publicly available to all. This initiative reinforces Manchester’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that culture is accessible to everyone, everywhere, in every form.
