Bringing city departments together for a circular future

Turku – Finland

Pillar 1:
Ecological transition in the field of culture

Priority 9:
Training our staff and local actors on biodiversity and ecological issues

The City of Turku organises monthly Circular Economy and Culture development sessions, bringing together staff and experts from different city departments to explore how culture and the creative sectors can contribute to the circular economy and the wider ecological transition.

The sessions provide a space for sharing knowledge, developing a common understanding, and identifying practical opportunities for collaboration between people working in different areas such as strategy, urban development, citizen engagement, culture, climate, and economic development.  Circular economy, culture, and the creative sectors are approached as cross-cutting themes that can support sustainable change across the city, rather than separate areas of work. By connecting different perspectives and areas of expertise, these sessions help staff recognize opportunities for circular practices in their own work and turn strategic sustainability goals into practical action.

The development sessions are part of Turku’s work in the Creative Circular Cities project, where cities across the Baltic Sea region explore how cultural and creative sectors and industries, local actors and residents can contribute to circular solutions. In this way, the sessions strengthen the ecological knowledge and skills of city staff while building cross-sectoral cooperation and supporting the integration of circular economy thinking into the city’s everyday activities.
