Culture in Your Neighbourhood: accessible culture for senior citizens

Turku – Finland

Pillar 2:
Inclusion in culture and through culture

Priority 11:
Providing access to cultural programmes for all, ensuring that barriers to access to culture are addressed

The City of Turku is piloting “Culture in Your Neighbourhood”, a new cultural service aimed at residents aged 65 and over. The service brings free cultural activities to neighbourhoods across Turku, including libraries, community spaces, and wellbeing centres. The programme includes activities such as craft workshops, films, group singing and karaoke. No prior registration or experience is required.

By bringing cultural experiences closer to where people live, the service also makes participation easier for seniors who may find travelling to the city centre difficult. Local events create natural meeting places where residents can meet their neighbours and connect through shared cultural activities.

In this way, “Culture in Your Neighbourhood” supports more inclusive access to culture while strengthening social connections and bringing cultural services closer to everyday life.
